Physical Therapist

Job Summary
Candidate will recruit, assess and/or treat patients in sub-acute stroke units as part of a multi-site clinical trial.
Organizational Status
The candidate will work at a stroke sub-acute inpatient rehabilitation unit. They will work with sub-acute inpatient stroke patients. The candidate will report to Dr. Janice Eng.
Work Performed
Candidate will either help recruiting people participating in an inpatient stroke rehabilitation program or teach and supervise an inpatient stroke rehabilitation program (non-academic program) for people with sub-acute stroke. The candidate who will help study recruitment will liaise with the hospital multi-disciplinary stroke team (physicians, nurses, therapists, social worker) to determine whether patients are eligible for the study; the Candidate who will teach and supervise an inpatient stroke rehabilitation program will evaluate, supervise and provide motivation for the program. The candidate will progress the clients on an individual basis based on their capability and participation.
Supervision Received
Candidate will recruit, assess and/or treat sub-acute patients with stroke in rehabilitation centres. The candidate will be supervised by Dr. Janice Eng, Professor, Department of Physical Therapy. However, Dr. Eng will not be on-site of the hospital that the candidate is working. Thus, the candidate must be fully competent and independent in their abilities to assess and supervise sub-acute stroke patients.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
As the candidate will be working with clients who may have dementia, may be non-ambulatory, and may be impulsive, the candidate must be able to supervise safely, spot the patient appropriately and progress the patient to being as independent as their function allows. Inappropriate judgment could result in an adverse effects to the patient (fall, fracture).

Inappropriate patient treatment could result in patients and their families becoming frustrated, angry or seeking compensation.

Inattention to paperwork detail (errors on forms, randomization not correct) could jeopardize the results to a multi-site clinical trial.

A University degree in Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy. .  Candidate must have prior clinical experience in stroke rehabilitation, particularly with sub-acute stroke, including stroke assessment, mobilizing non-ambulatory and ambulatory patients, understanding the pathology of stroke, and working with stroke patients with dementia. They must have prior experience in working and communicating with a multidisciplinary team.
