Occupational Health Nurse

Job Description Currently, the Health Safety & Wellness Centre is looking for an Occupational Health Nurse to join their team!

RDC’s Health, Safety & Wellness Centre offers students, faculty & staff a wide variety of confidential medical and nursing services – everything from medical aid and emergency care to crisis prevention and occupational health services.

Job Duties Responsibilities of the Occupational Health Nurse include:


  • Liaise with Alberta Health Services (AHS) and review the immunization requirements of AHS/Public Health/Canadian Disease Control (CDC).
  • Develop and update immunization policy for health care students and faculty.
  • Develop and maintain Blackboard courses to educate students on immunization requirements/process and blood/body fluid exposure.
  • Meet with all health care students and faculty one on one to assess immunization records prior to practicum placements and follow through to completion of immunization requirements.
  • Liaise with Deans, Associate Deans and Placement Office Personnel for follow up with faculty and students.
  • Maintain a comprehensive record keeping system for all health care students and faculty.

Health and Safety

  • Provide clinical nursing services for walk ins and appointments including but not limited to: wound management, removing sutures, syringing ears, blood pressure monitoring, remove foreign body from eye and skin, burn treatment, pregnancy testing and referrals.
  • Prepare lab requisitions.
  • Provide venipuncture and lab specimen collection for physician clinics and follow-up with patients.
  • Provides education of medical condition and appropriate preventative measures as needed included but not limited to blood pressure monitoring, nutrition and weight management, alcohol/drugs, STI’s, stress, anxiety, relationship problems, depression, family issues, grief, suicidal ideation, self-esteem etc.
  • Administer injections as ordered by the physician or family doctors.
  • Notify Communicable Disease Control for TB (Tuberculosis).
  • Assessment and referrals for STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections); assist with screening/education, treatment, and follow-up.
  • Provide emergency response nursing care including initial nursing assessment, treatment and referrals and follow up.
  • Arrange for emergency transport for students, faculty, staff contractors and visitors if necessary.
  • Injury assessment of musculoskeletal : sprain, strain, fracture and dislocation
  • Injury treatment including but not limited to: tensor bandaging, ice application, splint application and crutches
  • Complete patient documentation of assessment, treatment plan with follow-up care if needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all health records.
  • Maintain all emergency medical care, equipment and supplies are in good working condition.
  • Provide mental health nursing assessments, counselling and referrals for students and employees.
  • Participates in Orientation and Supervision of Nursing/Office Administration students during practicum placements.
  • Liaise with Community Professionals – develop, establish and maintain professional working relationships.
  • Collaborate with the Health and Safety team to ensure safe work and learning environments.
  • Conduct ergonomic assessments.
  • Conduct workplace hazard assessments.
  • Administer the Global Harmonization System (WHMIS program).

Promote Wellness

  • Work with the Health & Safety Committee to plan, organize, and implement strategies to promote the health and wellness of RDC students and employees.
Required Qualifications
  • RN and a current CARNA license
  • Three (3) to five (5) years’ experience in Occupational Health or Community Health Nursing
  • Mental Health Nursing experience
  • Current CPR and AED
  • Advanced assessment skills
  • Sound judgment, communication and diplomatic interpersonal skills
  • Client service focus and conflict resolution skills
  • Discretion, and initiative
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite
  • Accommodate a flexible work schedule if necessary
  • Ability to manage stress and time pressures while maintaining a good working attitude.
  • Self-motivated with attention to detail.
  • Ability to organize workload, set priorities and work within deadlines.
  • Maintains confidentiality of information.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills, including an ability to determine priorities, be self-directed, and work with minimal supervision.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Occupational Health Nursing certificate preferred
Salary or Hourly? Salary
Salary $74,719 annually
