 Clinical Nurse Educator – Medical Areas

Nova Scotia Health Authority provides health services to Nova Scotians and some specialized services to Maritimers and Atlantic Canadians. We operate hospitals, health centres and community-based programs across the province. Our team of health professionals includes employees, doctors, researchers, learners and volunteers that provide the health care or services you may need. This is accomplished across four geographic management zones which are responsible for the operation of acute care health centres and the provision of a variety of inpatient, outpatient services including academic, tertiary, quaternary care and community based programs and services including continuing care, primary health care, public health, and mental health and addictions.

 

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Zone Director of Interprofessional Practice and Learning and supporting the clinical programs in the zone, the Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE) is accountable to promote attainment of clinical excellence through the provision of education that focuses on optimal patient care within the Western Zone. Working collaboratively as a member of the Interprofessional Practice and Learning team in the Western Zone and across NSHA, and with other health care professionals and support staff, the CNE demonstrates expertise as an educator, consultant, researcher, facilitator, change agent and leader. Utilizing professional standards, current evidence, and best practice guidelines, the CNE fosters a culture of learning to build capacity and support the advancement of professional practice through the implementation of orientation and ongoing education programs that integrate a learner centred approach.  The CNE provides advice and consultation by building capacity; supporting and advancing practice; and maintaining and developing evidence based standards of care to optimize patient outcomes within the interprofessional care team.

The CNE will work in a generalist model in the zone with support from specialist expertise as identified to provide coverage to all sites as may be required within the zone. The CNE will work primarily within the SW area but will work with the zone CNE team to provide clinical educational support to identified programs/services.

The Clinical Nurse Educator exhibits sound professional judgment and initiative while working within the Mission, Vision, and Strategic Directions and incorporates into daily practice the Core Competencies and Values of the organization.  As well, the CNE works in alignment with the priorities of the Zone and NSHA Interprofessional Practice and Learning Portfolio.

The Clinical Nurse Educator exhibits sound professional judgment and initiative while working within the Mission, Vision, and Strategic Directions and incorporates into daily practice the Core Competencies and Values of the organization.  As well, the CNE works in alignment with the priorities of the Zone and NSHA Interprofessional Practice and Learning Portfolio.

Qualifications

* Bachelor of Nursing or Bachelor of Science in Nursing required

* Master’s degree in Nursing/Health/Education in progress or preferred

* Current BCLS with requirement to maintain on own

* Registered or eligible for registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia required

* A minimum of five (5) years recent clinical leadership experience as an educator or senior clinical leader

* Demonstrated experience in adult education and demonstrated teaching ability

* Working knowledge of program development, implementation and evaluation in IP approach

* Exemplary communication skills with ability to educate in multiple modalities

* Ability to work with Microsoft Office Suite and relevant clinical computer applications

* Demonstrated leadership competencies and attributes

* Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement initiatives and evidence informed practice

* Demonstrated initiative, critical thinking, innovative problem solving and conflict resolution skills

* Evidence of effective interpersonal relations and communication with all areas of staff in a variety of contexts

* Ability to work with minimal supervision, on a consultative basis, within the health care team

* Exhibits a customer service orientation and creates and maintains strong health care client/partner relationships

* Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning and professional development

* Commitment to promoting a culture that supports safety, ethical practices and organizational health

* Good attendance, work history and physical ability to perform the duties of the position

* Valid driver’s license and access to transportation required

* Travel within zone required and hours flexible to meet organization needs, as may be required.

* Completion of a Leadership Development Education Program

* Adult education/facilitation course

* Project Management

* Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred

* National medical-surgical nursing certification or willingness to complete
