Clinical Nurse Educator – Haemodialysis Unit

As a member of the Nephrology Leadership team, the Clinical Educator contributes to the quality of patient care in the Hemodialysis Unit, Nephrology/ Urology in-patient unit, Home Dialysis unit and associated clinics (KCC and transplant, etc), as a practice consultant and a quality development leader. This role assesses the learning needs of nursing and support staff, implementing educational plans that optimize patient focused care.

This is a unique opportunity for the Clinical Nurse Educator to support 4 areas of the Diabetes Comprehensive Care Program; specifically Hemodialysis, Nephrology/Urology in-patient unit, Home Dialysis and the Transplant program.


The Clinical Nurse Educator has 3 main areas of responsibility.


  • Education and staff development, particularly in relation to nurses
  • Assess learning needs and styles of nursing staff
  • Design and deliver education that is tailored to specific needs of unit/program
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of education, revises education and learning activities to support changes
  • Provides timely feedback to nursing staff on their learning and application to their practice competence


  • Collaborates and participates with Professional Practice to identify and support Corporate nursing initiatives
  • Engages members of the intra and interdisciplinary team, management team, Professional Practice and across hospital departments in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating Corporate and other educational initiatives
  • Participates in the hospital’s network of Clinical Nurse Educators and works with other Clinical Nurse Educator colleagues
  • Collaborates with the hospital’s Student Centre and Clinical Leader Manager to facilitate nursing student placements
  • Collaborates with Clinical Leader Manager in interviewing in interviewing, hiring and contributing to the evaluation of nursing staff


  • Participates in research projects that contribute to nursing and/or interprofessional practice and education
  • Participates in the implementation of evidence based practice and quality improvement initiatives including corporate initiatives


  • Registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Master’s degree in nursing or education
  • CNA certification in specialty area an asset
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience
  • Certification in Nephrology would be an asset
  • Previous experience as a Clinical Educator or expert practitioner in Nephrology, with experience in hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.
  • Proven program development abilities, presentation, coaching, and facilitation skills
  • Proven success in providing inspirational leadership in a team environment and in motivating and enhancing performance of team members
  • Demonstrated excellent organizational and communications skills
  • Excellent problem solving and management skills
